The Ecology of Urban Squirrels in Singapore
نویسنده
چکیده
In this study, observational studies were conducted on the population of plantain squirrels on the Kent Ridge campus of the National University of Singapore. Focal animal sampling was used, and activities of squirrels recorded down when they were located. Squirrels were observed to inhabit a range of vegetation types found on the campus, and majority of plant material consumed by the squirrels originated from non-native plants. Few competitors for similar foods were found, and no observations of predation on squirrels were observed. Caching and retrieval of food was also observed. It was concluded that squirrels are preadapted in several ways to flourish in a wide variety of habitats, including sparse vegetation. Urban vegetation has lowered the amount of competition from other animals otherwise present in unmanaged vegetation and reduced the risk of predation, allowing for the exploitation of new niches by the squirrels.

Commingling of Norway and Roof Rats with Native Rodents
The ecology of plague relies on the intermixing (commingling) of animal hosts and their ectoparasites. There has been a noticeable increase in commingling of rats and ground squirrels in Southern California in recent years. This paper discusses this phenomenon in Los Angeles and Orange Counties, where it occurs, how it results from man's activities, and the ecology of varying locations. The rol...

متن کاملSeasonal and among-site variation in the occurrence and abundance of fleas on California ground squirrels (Otospermophilus beecheyi).
An improved understanding of the ecology of fleas on California ground squirrels, Otospermophilus beecheyi, is warranted given the role of fleas in the transmission, and perhaps persistence, of the plague-causing bacterium Yersinia pestis. We sampled O. beecheyi on a seasonal basis from three study sites, each representing a different land use type (preserve, pasture, and agriculture) in the Sa...

Ecological destruction in human-dominated landscapes has significant impacts on environment sustainability internationally. Landscape planning can play a role in mitigating the effects of human-related activities. One element of landscape planning involves the analysis of the biological, spatial and social arrangement of areas in an urban environment and identifying characteristics that are und...
